You might have noticed a slight change to WhatsApp this week - a new status feature.
Coinciding with WhatsApp’s 8th birthday, the platform has decided to change the simple status feature to allow users to share photos, GIFs or videos that can be overlaid with drawings, emojis and a caption. They only last 24 hours, before the disappear. Sound familiar?
Why is this such a big step?
Around a year ago we talked about how the platform will open up, to allow businesses to get on board. This change might be the start in helping to feed into tech such as Conversational Commerce and give businesses the chance to advertise, alongside talking with their customers.
What is this new feature?
Starting today, we are rolling out an update to status, which allows you to share photos and videos with your friends and contacts on WhatsApp in an easy and secure way. Yes, even your status updates are end-to-end encrypted.
Whilst WhatsApp remains the same, this is a new feature added to the platform. There separate tab with a + sign that takes users straight to the WhatsApp camera. Tap that button and you’ll also see updates from other friends and family.
